Alejandro Brittes Quartet innovatively explores the traditional, cross-border chamamé musical genre, a confluence of folk music from northeastern Argentina and southern Brazil, infused with indigenous Guaraní and Iberian Baroque influences, slow-cooked over centuries.
This electrifying concert features a sophisticated and danceable repertoire, and includes a mix of authorial songs with classics of the genre such as Km 11 and Merceditas − considered hymns in Argentina and southern Brazil. The evening becomes a transporting interaction with chamamé, reconnecting each audience member to the ancestral matrices of rhythm and, therefore, to the history of Latin America.
Chamamé, whose epicenter is northeast Argentina, has been inscribed on the
Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The unique ensemble, based in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, is composed of Alejandro Brittes (accordion) from Argentina, as well as Charlise Bandeira (flute), André Ely (seven-stringed guitar), and Carlos de Césaro (contrabass), all three from Brazil.
